The Power of Gratitude
We each know that gratitude helps and makes us feel better. In real time and also according to science, gratitude produces numerous health benefits. When we are in gratitude we produce more positive emotions and the brain chemicals that make us feel good increase. Did you know that when we are in gratitude we increase the number of “we” words we us?. Gratitude moves us away from toxic emotions because we feel blessed.
Gratitude helps our attitude even if we don’t share it out loud with others. Even if we write a letter of gratitude and don’t send it, it is helpful to use to do so.
Reading about gratitude recently I learned that the benefits of gratitude grow over time. Not all the benefits are instantaneous, such as we feel better in the moment. As we sustain this feeling through time. we receive the deeper benefits of gratitude. In a scientific study on the power of writing letters of gratitude (whether sent or not) it took 12 weeks of writing practice for the benefits to really emerge in the person’s life. The studies show actual benefits to our brains.
