With all that is going on the world right now, we can each use a lot of forgiveness. Forgiveness is not about condoning wrong action. It is about loving and letting go and is as much for yourself as for another.
There can be a lot of mixed emotions to sort out, when we feel a need to forgive. We can feel angry, entangled and hurt. We can have difficulty expressing our feelings and feeling safe to be authentic. Sometimes we need help sorting out these deep feelings.
When you are in need of letting someone or yourself off the hook try this exercise.
Forgiveness Exercise
1. Identify a person or situation where you feel anger or hurt or exhausted and you choose to forgive.
2. Create an imaginary movie screen across the room from you. Imagine a plexiglass shield between you and the movie screen. Imagine the situation is on the movie screen.
3. Observe the situation. Consider the possibility that the other person or you were hurting. Down underneath each person was in need of love.
4. Notice the limitations that caused the behavior in the situation. Consider if resources such as love, empathy, boundaries and forgiveness had been more present how things would have been different.
5. Now, Identify a different time when you had the resources that were needed by each of you. Imagine sending that resource (love, empathy boundaries) to each person involved. The more you can feel the resources in your body, the more effective the exercise will be.
6. Imagine each person responding in the original situation with the new resources. How would the situation be different? Imagine yourselves interacting in a new resourceful way.
7. Remember another time when you were able to forgive someone and step into that feeling. Re-live the feeling of forgiveness. Send forgiveness to each of you.
8. Do this until you can imagine each person responding in a new way. Even a small change can make a difference. Imagine looking into each person’s eyes and saying, “I forgive you”.
This exercise can be done as many times as needed. The more you can step into the feeling of forgiveness the better it works.
